Scott Ferguson

Scott has more than 30 years of experience in sustainable forest management and planning. He has provided comprehensive forest management services to a diverse set of landowners. Current clients include private family forest owners across northwest Oregon, the Trappist Abbey Monastery, and numerous municipalities. Scott prides himself in being a "dirt forester" who is especially skilled in resolving issues on community owned forests and crafting solutions that meet a diverse set of management objectives.

Barry Sims
Partner/Forester (Portland)

B.A. PHILOSOPHY, SWARTHMORE COLLEGE
M.S. FORESTRY, UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT

Barry grew up in Idaho and was inspired to become a forester by the mountains and woods there. He co-founded Trout Mountain Forestry in 2006 and has been its Managing Partner for seven years. Barry is very active in the planning, stewardship, and managing client forest properties. His consulting career has included work for family forests, municipal watersheds, research forests, land trusts, and recreation properties - a wide spectrum of multiple-use forest ownership in Oregon. Barry is a Professional Member of the Association of Consulting Foresters and a Past Board Member of the Clackamas County Farm Forestry Association and Forest Park Conservancy. He lives in Portland with his wife and two adult sons.

Mike Messier
Forester (Portland)

Mike has been a forester at Trout Mountain Forestry’s Portland office since 2010, working with family forestland owners, municipalities, and non-profits in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. Mike manages Trout Mountain's seedling and reforestation program and is the company lead in GIS. He is also a Professional Member of the Association of Consulting Foresters and a certified Technical Service Provider (TSP) with the Natural Resource Conservation Service. Mike lives in Portland with his wife, son, and daughter.

Matt Fehrenbacher
Partner/Forester (Corvallis)

B.S. FOREST MANAGEMENT,
OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY

A native of the rural Willamette Valley, Matt has spent the last thirty years in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, managing private forestlands for a broad range of objectives. Since joining Trout Mountain Forestry in 2011 and becoming a Partner in 2020, he has developed a diverse client base, including municipalities, family forests, and non-profit conservation organizations. Matt’s areas of expertise include: 

  • Forest Management Planning, including Growth and Yield Modeling

  • Operations Management

  • Silviculture Prepscription Development 

  • GIS, Resource Inventory Design, and Management 

Matt is a Certified Forester with the Society of American Foresters, a Professional Member of the Association of Consulting Foresters, a Member of the Forest Stewards Guild, and the Past Chair of the City of Corvallis Watershed Management Advisory Commission.

Shane Hetzler

Shane is a native Oregonian with over a decade of experience in forestry and conservation. He is a certified Technical Service Provider (TSP) for the Natural Resource Conservation Service, a licensed herbicide applicator with the Oregon Department of Agriculture, and a Professional Member of the Association of Consulting Foresters and the Forest Stewards Guild. Shane's forestry career started with the Peace Corps as an agroforestry extension agent in Senegal, West Africa. He later studied and worked in New England - first as a graduate student, then as a forestry professional. He started a forestry consulting firm based in Southern New England, which he ran for several years before returning home to Oregon to join Trout Mountain Forestry in 2016.

Shane’s interests include fostering connections between people and their forests through thoughtful engagement around forest management, leveraging the best available science for positive on-the-ground outcomes, and getting outside as much as possible for "non-work" time, including volunteering with his local Search and Rescue unit. He lives in Corvallis with his wife and young daughter.

Pamela Hines
Office Manager (Portland)

Pamela took over Trout Mountain’s office management in Spring 2016, streamlining work systems and organizational methods to support the company’s continued growth. Providing timely, attentive, and friendly service to Trout Mountain’s clients and vendors is critical to her work goals. She enjoys occasional trips to the field to meet landowners and contractors face-to-face. Pamela is an Affiliate Member of the Society of American Foresters and Forest Stewards Guild. 

An avid bicyclist, Pamela enjoys commuting to the Portland office by bike. In her spare time, she volunteers on the Board of Directors for Umbrella and is active in transportation issues in her neighborhood. Pamela also enjoys hiking, rollerskating, and long, meandering walks with her canine companion, Piper. She is grateful to be part of the team of caring and knowledgeable professionals at Trout Mountain Forestry.
